According to Oxford Dictionaries’ definition of cliché – it means a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays a lack of original thought. So, when I attended a conference last week the keynote speaker came out with many expressions of ‘wisdom’. Many of them could be described as clichés. The question I pondered is whether these ideas / clichés were valuable or not? Let me list a few from that presentation: Technology is an enabler, nothing more. Leadership is key. Get the right people on the bus. The standard you walk past is the standard you set. Happy customers come back. It’s the little things that make the difference. Write your goals down. Teamwork works. Culture is caught not taught. Train them don’t blame them. I’m going to stop this list as they go on and on, cliché after cliché. We’ve heard it all before.
